Production
Development
On 1 June 2022, Rhys Frake-Waterfield expressed interest in creating a sequel, and wants to "ramp it up even more and go even crazier and go even more extreme".[8] On 4 November 2022, Frake-Waterfield announced that a sequel was in development with himself returning as director and writer, on a budget "five times" larger than the previous instalment. The production is anticipated to meet a February 2024 release.[9] In May 2022, it was confirmed that Frake-Waterfield would return as writer and director, while co-producing alongside Scott Jeffrey for Jagged Edge Productions while Stuart Alson and Nicole Holland serve as executive producers for ITN Studios. ITN will handle distribution in North America.[10] In September 2023, teaser images were released showing the addition of the new character Owl.[11] The film features a new cast and new character designs, and takes place in the Ashdown community rather than the Hundred Acre Wood.[12] Additionally, the character Tigger, who was absent from the first film, appears.[5]
Budget and inspiration
The film was originally reported to have a budget five times larger than its predecessor;[13] it would later be confirmed that the budget had increased to ten times larger than the first film.[14] Winnie-the-Pooh's prosthetics in the film cost over $20,000, compared to the $770 spent on the first film's costume.[1] Shaune Harrison, who previously worked on productions such as World War Z, the Harry Potter franchise, and Game of Thrones, was the film's creature and gore designer, while Paula Anne Booker leads the special effects.[12] In 2023, it was revealed Frake-Waterfield intends to have Pooh wield a chainsaw as a weapon in the film,[15] and that the film would feature over 30 deaths.[14] The film takes inspiration from Terrifier 2.[16]
Casting
In September 2023, Lewis Santer, Scott Chambers, Simon Callow, Ryan Oliva and Peter DeSouza-Feighoney, Eddy MacKenzie and Marcus Massey joined the cast.[5][6]
Filming
Production began in late 2023.[10]
Release
Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey II premiered at the Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square, London, on March 18, 2024. It was released in cinemas by Fathom Events for three days beginning on March 26, 2024.[1] It was originally scheduled to release on 14 February 2024[9][17]
Reception
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 53% of 19 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 4.9/10.[3] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 36 out of 100, based on five critics, indicating "generally unfavorable" reviews.[18]
Sequel
In March 2024, during an interview with MovieWeb, Lewis Santer, who plays a sadistic Tigger in Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2, teased more adventures for this terrifying take in Winnie-the-Pooh and his pals, seemingly confirming that Blood and Honey 3 is in the works, and it will be part of the childhood favorite-to-horror universe being crafted by Rhys Frake-Waterfield and Jagged Edge Productions, with Santer also hinting at a possible solo outing for his terrifying Tigger.[19] On March 28, 2024, the film was confirmed by producers. The film will have a bigger budget than the previous films and will introduce new characters from the original Winnie-the-Pooh stories, including Rabbit, the heffalumps and the woozles.[20]
